How to convert HEIC to GIF

  1. Add your photos. Drop HEIC files onto the frame at the top of the page, choose them from your device, or paste them. You can add up to 100 at once.
  2. Check the format. GIF is already selected on this page. GIF files are created on our server, so photos are uploaded and deleted right after conversion.
  3. Download. Each photo converts automatically as soon as you add it. Download them one by one, or take everything at once as a ZIP.

What to expect from a GIF of a photo

GIF can show only 256 distinct colours in a picture. A photograph contains many thousands, so converting squeezes the colours down and adds dithering, a speckle pattern that imitates the missing shades. Skies and skin tones show it most. File sizes can also come out larger than the JPG would be.

GIF is a good choice for small flat graphics, icons and simple animations. For photos, JPG, PNG or WebP will look better and weigh less.

Can I make an animated GIF from a Live Photo?

Not with this converter. It takes the still image from a HEIC and produces a single-frame GIF. On an iPhone, the Shortcuts app includes a "Make GIF" action that builds an animated GIF from a series of photos or from video, and Live Photos can be turned into a looping video using the Loop or Bounce effects in the Photos app.

Privacy for this format

Unlike JPG, PNG, WebP, PDF and BMP, GIF output is generated on our server. Your photo is uploaded over an encrypted connection, converted, handed back to you, and then deleted. Uploaded originals are removed as soon as conversion finishes, and converted files are removed after you download them or after about 15 minutes at the latest. Metadata such as location is stripped. Why does my GIF look grainy?

GIF supports only 256 colours, so photos are dithered. Choose JPG, PNG or WebP for better looking photos.

Will my Live Photo become an animated GIF?

No. Only the still image is converted. Use the Shortcuts app on iPhone for animated GIFs.

Are my photos uploaded?

Yes, for GIF only. They are processed on our server and deleted right after conversion.

Is there a size limit?

Each file can be up to 40 MB.
