How to convert HEIC to JPG

  1. Add your photos. Drop HEIC files onto the frame at the top of the page, choose them from your device, or paste them. You can add up to 100 at once.
  2. Check the format. JPG is already selected on this page. Move the quality slider if you want smaller files. 92 is a good default for photos you will keep.
  3. Download. Each photo converts automatically as soon as you add it. Download them one by one, or take everything at once as a ZIP.

Why convert HEIC to JPG

HEIC is the format iPhones use by default because it stores a photo in roughly half the space of a JPG. The catch is compatibility. JPG opens on practically every device, app and website, while HEIC often does not.

The usual reasons people convert:

  • A Windows PC shows a blank thumbnail or asks you to install an extension. Here is how to open HEIC on Windows without converting, if you prefer.
  • A website, job portal or print shop rejects the upload with a message like "file type not supported". This guide covers that error.
  • You are sending photos to someone with an older phone, tablet or office software.
  • You need a format your editing tool understands.

Converting creates a new file. Your original HEIC photos are never changed.

What quality setting should I use?

JPG is a lossy format, so the quality slider trades file size against detail. The default of 92 is a sensible choice: differences from the original are very hard to see at normal viewing size, and files stay reasonable.

QualityBest for
100Largest files. Rarely worth it, because the extra size buys almost no visible improvement.
92 (default)Photos you want to keep, print or edit.
80Email, messaging and web pages. Noticeably smaller, still looks clean.
60 to 70Thumbnails and uploads with strict size limits. Fine detail starts to soften.

If a form limits file size, also try the "Largest side" menu. Shrinking a 12-megapixel photo to 1920 px on the long edge cuts the file size dramatically while staying sharp on any screen.

What changes when HEIC becomes JPG

For ordinary photos, nothing you will notice. For the technically curious:

  • Colour depth. HEIC can hold more than 8 bits per colour channel. JPG is 8-bit, so it is flattened to that. It is invisible in nearly every real use.
  • Live Photos and bursts. Only the main still image is converted. The short video of a Live Photo is not included.
  • Depth data. Portrait-mode depth information is dropped.
  • Photo tags. Browser-based conversion redraws the picture, so tags such as capture date and location are not copied into the JPG. If you need them, export from the Photos app instead. The steps are here.

Is my data safe?

For JPG, PNG, WebP, PDF and BMP, your photos are decoded and converted by your own browser, in your device’s memory. They are not sent to our server. You can check this yourself: open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab and convert a photo. You will see no upload.

The only time a file leaves your device is if you tick the optional box to let us convert photos your browser cannot read, or if you choose GIF or TIFF. Those files are deleted from our server immediately after conversion. Details are on the privacy page.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?

Slightly, because JPG is a lossy format. At the default quality of 92 the difference is very hard to see. Keep your original HEIC files if you may want the full-quality version later.

Are my photos uploaded to your server?

Not for JPG. Conversion happens in your browser. A file is only sent to our server if you choose GIF or TIFF, or if you opt in to the server fallback for photos your browser cannot decode. Those files are deleted immediately after conversion.

Why is the date or location missing from my converted JPG?

Converting in the browser redraws the image and does not copy photo tags such as capture date, camera model or GPS. If you need them, export JPGs from the Photos app on your iPhone or Mac instead. The guide linked above has the steps.

How many photos can I convert at once?

Up to 100 per batch, with no daily limit. If you have hundreds, convert them in several batches so your browser does not run out of memory.

A few of my HEIC files fail to convert. Why?

Some HEIC variants, for example certain HDR photos, are not supported by every decoder. Safari uses Apple’s own decoder and usually handles iPhone photos best. You can also export those photos as JPG from the Photos app.

Can I stop my iPhone from saving photos as HEIC?

Yes. Go to Settings, Camera, Formats and choose Most Compatible. See the full guide, including what you give up.
