You pick a photo on your phone, the website says the file type is not supported, or the picture silently fails to upload. In almost every case the photo is a HEIC and the website only accepts JPG or PNG.
The fastest fix: convert to JPG
- Open the HEIC to JPG converter in your browser.
- Add the photos. They convert automatically on your device.
- Download the JPG files and upload those instead.
If the site has a file-size limit, set the quality to about 80 or the "Largest side" menu to 1920 px before downloading.
If you need a PDF instead
Many forms want a PDF. Use HEIC to PDF to turn one or many photos into a single document.
Stop it happening again
- On iPhone, choose Settings, Camera, Formats, Most Compatible so new photos are JPG. Full steps.
- Uploading from the iPhone photo picker often converts HEIC to JPG automatically, while choosing files from the Files app does not. If an upload fails from Files, try choosing the photo from the Photos library instead.
For website owners
If your own site rejects HEIC, consider accepting it and converting server-side, or converting in the visitor’s browser before upload. iPhone users are a large share of mobile visitors, and a hard rejection means lost submissions.
