Convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone and Mac without any website

You do not need a website to convert HEIC. Apple’s own apps can do it, and, unlike browser-based tools, they keep your photos’ capture date and location tags. Here is each method, with the cases where it fits best.

On a Mac with Preview

  1. Select the HEIC files in Finder and open them in Preview.
  2. For several photos, press Command-A in the sidebar to select all thumbnails.
  3. Choose File, then Export Selected Images (or Export for a single photo).
  4. Set Format to JPEG, adjust the quality slider, and save.

On a Mac with Photos

  1. Select photos in the Photos app.
  2. Choose File, Export, Export Photos.
  3. Set Photo Kind to JPEG and choose the quality and size. Tick the location option if you want GPS kept.

On a Mac with Finder Quick Actions

On recent versions of macOS you can right-click files in Finder, choose Quick Actions, Convert Image, and pick JPEG or PNG plus a size. It is the fastest route for a folder of photos.

On an iPhone or iPad

  1. Shortcuts app. Create a shortcut with the Convert Image action, set the format to JPEG, and run it on selected photos from the share sheet. It keeps working on batches and runs entirely on the phone.
  2. Files app. Save the photos to Files, then long-press an image and look for Convert Image in the quick actions. Which options appear depends on your iOS version.
  3. Prevent it. Change Settings, Camera, Formats to Most Compatible so new photos are JPG. See this guide.

Menu names change between iOS and macOS versions. If an option is missing, search Apple Support for your OS version.

When a web converter is easier

If you are on Windows, on a shared computer, or want to convert a large batch with a ZIP download, the HEIC to JPG converter is quicker. Remember that it does not copy capture date or location into the JPG.
