Convert JPG to HEIC

Convert JPG or JPEG photos to HEIC to shrink them, typically by a third to a half. Here is the honest version of when that is worth doing, because most people do not need to.

JPG to HEIC Server, deleted right after

Drop JPG, PNG or WebP photos

or . Paste works too. Up to 100 at a time.

HEIC files are created on our server. Your photos are uploaded, converted, then deleted straight away.

How to convert JPG to HEIC

  1. Add your photos. Drop JPG files onto the frame at the top, or choose them from your device. You can add up to 100 at once.
  2. Set the quality. 90 keeps files visually close to the original while still saving space. The size menu can shrink photos further.
  3. Download. Photos are converted on our server and deleted right after. Download them individually or all at once as a ZIP.

When JPG to HEIC makes sense

Anything that opens a HEIC also opens a JPG, so this conversion is rarely about compatibility. It is about storage.

  • You are archiving a large photo library and want to use less disk or cloud space.
  • A specific app or workflow in your pipeline expects HEIC input.
  • You are testing how your software handles HEIC files.

The trade-offs, honestly

JPG and HEIC are both lossy. Converting a JPG to HEIC compresses the already compressed image a second time. At sensible quality settings the second loss is small, but it is real, and it never makes the photo better than the JPG it came from.

  • Keep the JPG. Do not delete your originals until you have checked the HEIC copies open where you need them.
  • Compatibility. HEIC opens natively on Apple devices and recent Android phones, but Windows needs extensions and many websites reject it. See opening HEIC on Windows.
  • Metadata is removed, including capture date and location.

Privacy for this format

Creating HEIC needs software that browsers do not have, so this conversion runs on our server. Your photo is uploaded over an encrypted connection, converted, handed back, and the uploaded original is deleted immediately. The converted file is removed after you download it or after about 15 minutes. See the privacy page.

Frequently asked questions

Will the HEIC be smaller than my JPG?

Usually yes, by roughly a third to a half for photos at similar visual quality. Very small or already heavily compressed JPGs save less.

Does converting JPG to HEIC improve quality?

No. It cannot add detail and adds a small amount of new compression loss.

Will the HEIC open on Windows?

Only after installing Microsoft’s HEIF extensions. A JPG opens everywhere, which is why most people keep JPG for sharing.

Are my photos uploaded?

Yes, for this conversion. They are processed on our server and deleted right after.

Can I convert the HEIC back to JPG later?

Yes, with our HEIC to JPG converter, which runs entirely in your browser. Each round trip costs a little quality, so avoid converting back and forth.
