Convert PNG to HEIC

PNG files of photographs are huge. Converting them to HEIC can shrink them dramatically. For flat graphics and text screenshots, PNG is already efficient and HEIC is usually the wrong move.

HEIC files are created on our server. Your photos are uploaded, converted, then deleted straight away.

How to convert PNG to HEIC

  1. Add your PNG files by dropping them on the frame at the top or choosing them from your device. You can add up to 100 at once.
  2. Set the quality. 90 is a good balance between size and fidelity for photographic images.
  3. Download. Files are converted on our server and deleted right after. Take them one by one or as a ZIP.

Which PNGs benefit

PNG is lossless, so a PNG of a photo stores every pixel and is many times larger than the same photo as a JPG or HEIC. That is where converting pays off. Screenshots, logos and flat-colour graphics are a different story: PNG compresses them very well already, and lossy HEIC can blur sharp text and thin lines.

Your PNG is…Convert to HEIC?
A photo or photo-like renderYes, savings are often very large
A screenshot with textUsually no, keep the PNG
A logo or iconNo, keep PNG or use SVG
A cut-out with transparencyPossible, but check that your apps read HEIC transparency

Things to check first

  • Keep the original PNG until you have confirmed the HEIC looks right where you will use it.
  • Support for transparency in HEIC varies between apps.
  • Metadata is removed during conversion.
  • HEIC needs extensions on Windows. See the Windows guide.

Privacy for this format

HEIC encoding happens on our server. Files are uploaded over an encrypted connection, converted, returned, and the uploaded original is deleted straight away. Converted files are removed after download or after about 15 minutes. See the privacy page.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my PNG get?

For photographs, often by a large margin, because PNG stores everything losslessly. For flat graphics the saving is small or negative.

Is PNG to HEIC lossless?

No. HEIC compression here is lossy, so a small amount of detail is traded for size.

Is transparency preserved?

HEIC can store transparency, and it is kept when the source has it, but not every app displays it correctly.

Are my files uploaded?

Yes, for this conversion. They are deleted right after.
