How to convert HEIF to JPG
- Add your photos. Drop HEIC files onto the frame at the top of the page, choose them from your device, or paste them. You can add up to 100 at once.
- Check the format. JPG is already selected on this page. Files are recognised by what is inside them, not by their extension, so .heif, .heic and .hif all work.
- Download. Each photo converts automatically as soon as you add it. Download them one by one, or take everything at once as a ZIP.
HEIF, HEIC and HIF: what is the difference?
HEIF is a container standard for images. HEIC is HEIF with the image data compressed using HEVC (H.265), which is what iPhones write. You will also see .hif, the extension that Canon’s recent cameras use for HEIF stills. In practice they are the same family of file and the same tool converts them.
| Extension | Usually from |
|---|---|
| .heic | iPhone, iPad, many recent Android phones |
| .heif | Some Android phones, Sony and Nikon cameras, exports from editing software |
| .hif | Canon EOS R-series cameras |
A caution about HDR HEIF from cameras
Some cameras can save 10-bit HDR HEIF files that use the PQ transfer curve. A normal JPG is an SDR image, so these files can look dull or dark after conversion because a browser cannot tone-map them the way an HDR display does.
If that is what you see, use your camera maker’s software, or Lightroom, to export a proper SDR JPG. Standard iPhone photos are not affected.
Opening HEIF without converting
On Windows you can view these files after installing Microsoft’s HEIF Image Extensions. Our Windows guide walks through it. On a Mac, Preview and Photos open them directly.
Frequently asked questions
Is HEIF the same as HEIC?
HEIC is the most common kind of HEIF file: HEIF with HEVC compression. The converter handles both.
What is a .hif file?
Canon cameras use .hif for HEIF still images. This tool reads them like any other HEIF file.
Why does my converted photo look washed out?
It is probably an HDR HEIF. JPG is an SDR format, so HDR tone information is lost. Export an SDR JPG with your camera software or Lightroom.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Conversion runs in your browser.
