How to convert HEIC to BMP
- Add your photos. Drop HEIC files onto the frame at the top of the page, choose them from your device, or paste them. You can add up to 100 at once.
- Check the format. BMP is already selected on this page. Use "Largest side" to cut file size, because BMP stores every pixel.
- Download. Each photo converts automatically as soon as you add it. Download them one by one, or take everything at once as a ZIP.
Why BMP files are so big
BMP stores three bytes for every pixel with no compression. A 12-megapixel iPhone photo (4032 by 3024 pixels) therefore becomes a file of roughly 36 MB, compared with 2 to 5 MB for a JPG. If a program needs BMP but only for small images, set "Largest side" to 1280 or 1920 px first.
When you actually need BMP
- Legacy Windows software and older image-processing tools.
- Embedded displays and hardware that read raw bitmap files.
- Teaching and experiments where you want direct access to pixel data.
For anything else, JPG or PNG is a better choice.
Format details
Files are written as standard 24-bit Windows bitmaps. Because 24-bit BMP has no alpha channel, any transparent pixels are flattened onto a white background.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my BMP file so large?
BMP is uncompressed. A 12-megapixel photo is about 36 MB. Reduce "Largest side" to shrink it.
Does BMP support transparency?
The 24-bit BMP produced here does not. Transparent areas are placed on white.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. BMP conversion runs in your browser.
